Polymeric Sanding

Lock your pavers in. Keep the weeds out.

About this service

Polymeric Sanding done properly.

After we pressure wash an interlock driveway, walkway or patio, the joints between your pavers are clean — and empty. Polymeric sand is the finishing step that refills those joints with a premium polymer-bound sand that hardens into a firm, flexible bond. It stops weeds from sprouting, keeps ants from tunnelling, and locks every stone in place so your pavers stop shifting underfoot.

Polymeric Sanding
Deep dive

Everything to know about polymeric sanding.

Polymeric sand is what separates a paver job that looks great for one season from one that looks great for a decade. It's a blend of fine sand and polymer binders that, once activated with water, cures into a firm but flexible joint filler. Unlike mortar, it flexes with our brutal Toronto freeze-thaw cycles instead of cracking, and unlike plain sand, it stays put through heavy rain and snow melt.

Timing matters. The pavers and joints must be completely dry before the sand goes in — even a trace of moisture causes the polymer to set prematurely on the surface, leaving a haze on the stones that's a nightmare to remove. We almost always schedule the wash and the sanding on separate days so the surface has a full sunny day to dry out before we sweep.

Installation is methodical. Sand is poured onto the surface and swept diagonally into every joint, then we use a plate compactor (with a protective pad) to vibrate it deep into the joint. We sweep more in, compact again, and repeat until the joints are full to within a few millimeters of the paver top. Then comes the water — applied as a fine mist in stages, never a flood, so the polymer activates evenly through the full depth of the joint. The result is a finished surface that looks brand new and behaves like a single connected unit.

What's included

  • Full pressure wash of the paver surface first
  • Joints flushed clean of old, depleted sand
  • Surface allowed to fully dry before sanding
  • Premium polymeric sand swept into every joint
  • Mechanical compaction to settle sand deep into the joints
  • Top-up sweep to fill any remaining voids
  • Fine-mist water activation to set the polymer
  • Full clean-up — no sand left on the paver faces

How it works

  1. STEP 1

    Wash & dry

We pressure wash the pavers, flush out the old joint sand, and let the surface dry completely — wet joints ruin the bond.

  2. STEP 2

    Sweep & compact

Premium polymeric sand is swept in, then compacted so it settles to the full joint depth. We top up and repeat until every joint is full.

  3. STEP 3

    Activate

A fine mist activates the polymer in stages. Done right, it cures into a firm, flexible bond that flexes with freeze-thaw cycles.

Why customers book it

  • Stops pavers from shifting and rocking
  • Flexes with freeze-thaw — won't crack like mortar
  • Restores a crisp, finished look to your interlock
  • Extends the life of the entire paver installation

Frequently asked questions

Do I really need polymeric sand after a pressure wash?

Yes. Pressure washing pavers flushes out the old joint sand. Leaving the joints empty means weeds, ants and shifting stones within a season. Polymeric sand is what locks everything back in.

How long does polymeric sand last?

Properly installed polymeric sand lasts 5–10+ years in GTA conditions. It will slowly wear down over time and can be topped up without re-doing the whole surface.

Can you do polymeric sanding without pressure washing first?

We can, but we don't recommend it. The new sand bonds best to clean, debris-free joints. If you've washed recently we can pick up from there.

What if it rains right after?

We watch the forecast carefully and only schedule the activation step when we have a clear weather window. If unexpected rain comes through before the polymer sets, we'll come back and re-do affected sections free.

Will the sand stain my pavers?

No — we use premium polymeric sand and clean every grain off the paver faces before activating with water. Done correctly, the finish is clean and the sand stays in the joints where it belongs.
